1997 has been declared the "Melanchthon Year" which celebrates the 500th anniversary of the birth of the great humanist and reformer Phillip Melanchthon. The celebration takes place under the auspices of the office of the German President Roman Herzog. The Melanchthon Year was opened in a festive ceremony on October 31, 1996 in the Schlosskirche (Castle Church) Wittenberg.
Melanchthon's motto was:
"Is God for us,
who would like to be against us"
(Romans 8, 31)
